Men’s Competitions and Trophies
Monthly Medal Competitions will be held during the season over eighteen holes. Those scoring equal to or better than CSS will be then eligible to play in the Final for the Partington Cup. Further details given below under that heading.
Club Championship the Harry Joyce Trophy
The winner of The Harry Joyce Trophy will be the player who scores the lowest gross aggregate score for any four medal rounds throughout the season to include the 4 Monthly Medals, Lanceley Salver, Captain's Weekend (Sat only), The Nuttall Cup, Mrs Woods Cup, President's Day, The Fitton Trophy and the Partington Cup. they will hold the title of Club Champion. In the event of a tie there will be a 18 hole medal play off, which will be followed by sudden death , if scores are still level.
The Abraham Cup
Will be held for one year by the winner of a match play competition to be played during the season. Limit handicap 16. A memento, provided by the club will be given to the winner. Entry sheets and particulars of the draw will be posted in the Club house.
Glossop and District Challenge Cup
A cup presented by the late Mr B Moseley will be held for one year by the winner of a bogey competition over 18 holes. A memento provided by the Club will be presented to the winner. Note: The Challenge Cup will be based on FULL handicap
The Partington Challenge Cup
Presented by the late Rt Hon Lord Doverdale, will be held for one year by the winner of the Final Medal Round over 18 holes in September. All players scoring equal to or better than CSS qualify for the Final, from 6 Medal rounds as indicated by the competitions committee at the beginning of each season. A memento provided by the Club will be presented to the winner.
The Sidebottom Challenge Cup
Presented by the late Major R B Sidebottom JP will be held for one year by the winner of a bogey competition over 18 holes on FULL handicap. A memento provided by the Club will be presented to the winner. The cup was re-presented to the Club having been won outright by Mr G Dodd, who won the cup on three consecutive occasions. This was originally a 36 hole competition.
The Mrs Wood’s Cup
A cup presented by the late Mrs S Wood. The cup will be held for one year by the winner. The cup will be contested by medal played over 18 holes. A memento provided by the Club will be presented to the winner.
The Lanceley Salver
Presented by the late Major T Lanceley MC JP will be competed for annually on a date to be announced in the fixture list and will be held for one year, by the winner of a medal competition over 18 holes. A memento provided by the Club will be presented to the winner. This Salver was
re-presented to the Club, having been won outright by Mr R Bennett who won the Salver on three consecutive occasions.
The Nuttall Cup
Presented by the late Mr Nuttall will be competed for annually over. Play will be over 18 holes medal to be announced in the fixture list and the cup will be held for one year. A memento provided by the Club will be presented to the winner. This was originally a 36 hole
competition.
The George Beever Trophy
Presented to the club by Messrs Sidney and Alec Beever in memory of their father. Will be held for one year by the player who having entered this competition and returns the best six nett medal scores in competition during the season, (to include the 4 Monthly Medals, Lanceley Salver, Captain's Weekend (Sat only), The Nuttall Cup, Mrs Woods Cup, President's Day, The Fitton Trophy and the Partington Cup.)
The Taylor Cup
A Summer Singles Match Competition to be played during the season. The winner will hold the cup presented by Mr E R Taylor and will receive a memento provided by the Club. Entry sheets and particulars of the draw will be posted in the Club house.
The Higginbottom Cup
A winter 4BBB stableford competition will be played during the off season. The winners will hold the cup presented by Mr P H Higginbottom. Entry sheets and particulars of the competition rules will be posted in the Club house.
The Rabbit’s Trophy
A trophy presented by Mrs J Greenwood will be held for one year by the winner of a medal competition over 18 holes for competitors having handicaps not lower than 18.
The Malcolm Siddall Memorial Salver
Presented by Mrs K Siddall and family, will be held for one year by the winner of a specified Single Stableford competition.
The Norah Hadfield Trophy
Presented by Mrs J R Hadfield will be held for one year by the winner of a fourball betterball stableford.
The Bennett Trophy
Presented by Messrs J H and A B E Bennett will be held for one year by the winner of a competition for junior members.
The Veteran’s Trophy
Presented by Mr E Metcalfe for the best single Stableford score by a player aged 50 or over in a specified competition.
The Scratch Gold Medal
Presented by Messrs J A and T A Booth will be held for one year by the player returning the best Gross score on President’s Day.
The President’s Putter
Presented by Mr E R Taylor will be held for one year by the winner with the best nett medal score on President’s Day.
The George Furniss Trophy
Presented by Davis, Hope and Furniss (solicitors) will be held for one year by the winner of a Greensomes competition.
The Fitton Trophy
presented by the family of the late Mr W Fitton will be competed for on an annual basis and will be held for one year, To be competed for over 18 holes medal play – best nett score. The winner will receive a memento provided by the Club.
Captain’s Cup and Captain’s Weekend
Presented by Mr P H Higginbottom will be held by the winner each year of the competition on Captain’s Weekend.
Note:
It has long been a tradition of Glossop and District Golf Club, for the defeated member of knock-out competitions to advance the winners name into the next round.
However it remains the responsibility of the winner to ensure his name is added on or prior to the final date of that round.
Winter League Format and Rules
This competition will be played as a 4 Ball Betterball Stableford Entry Cost - £10 per pair (Must be paid before you play) Entrance fee to be paid by posting in the post-box opposite the front entrance door in the foyer, where envelopes will be provided. Qualifying rounds will be played over 13 holes and the knock-out Rounds will played over 18 holes. A single player from the pair may represent the team in any of the nominated Qualifying rounds . Teams may comprise of Full Members, Ladies, The competition will be concluded before Opening Day of the new season.
Qualifying Competitions consisting of 13 holes will take place on the 4 dates before the Christmas holiday and 4 after the New Year. These dates may alter depending on the weather throughout the winter.
If a Winter League qualifying round is cancelled then it may be re-scheduled for the next available Saturday. The qualifying for the final knock out will be the best four scores from the 8 qualifying rounds. If we cannot complete all 8 rounds then the top 8 teams will be decided by using this formula.
8 Qualifying rounds completed best 4 to count.
7 Qualifying rounds completed best 4 to count.
6 Qualifying rounds completed best 3 to count.
5 Qualifying rounds completed best 3 to count.
4 Qualifying rounds completed best 2 to count.
KO Stages 18 Holes Match Play
The top 8 teams from the qualifying will play this 18 hole knockout phase to determining the overall Winter League Champions.
In the event of a tie for the top 8 teams, the team with the highest score throughout the competition will advance to the K.O. stages.
Winter competition Handicaps
The maximum handicap is 28 Index (players with handicap over 28 indices will play off 28 index) The winners and runners up each week in any Saturday competition will have their handicap index reduced by 10% and 5% respectively This handicap will remain in place for all Winter League games and internal competitions until Opening Day 0f the new season.
NB: It is each players responsibility to make sure they play off their correct handicap.
Signing On
Signing on for the winter league will be on every Thursday at 7.30pm, on the BRS booking system. The cut-off for signing on is 1pm on Friday before the Saturday competition. Each member may sign on for himself and playing partner only.
Members are reminded that even if one of the team is unable to play then the remaining partner is obliged under the etiquette rules, to be available to mark the opposing player’s card.
Players not entered into the winter league competition are still eligible to play in all the Saturday competitions.
Health& Safety
There will be a daily assessment to see if the course is fit for the use of buggy hire.
Please ensure you have the suitable footwear for the underfoot
conditions.

Competitions
Historically, Glossop has been an extremely competitive golf club and despite our size we have been extremely successful.
Here is a summary of what we will enter this year if we have enough support.
Manchester Alliance Dunham Forest – Single Matchplay Knock-out
We are past winners and this competition is for the low handicap golfers. Realistically, if you are above 7 handicap you are not going to get in this team. Usually played on Sundays.
Again we are past winners of this competition it requires 14 members to form a team, 5 Players 0 to 9 and 9 player 10 to 18 handicap If you enjoy Foursomes this is for you. Usually played on Sundays.
Manchester Alliance Mixed Foursomes Knock-out
Another competition that despite our size we have won, this is the Mixed Format and we require a minimum of 6 male members plus the Captain. Played mid week and Sundays.
Derbyshire Foursomes Division 1 – Matchplay Foursomes
Played as a knock-out A team of 4 played off scratch handicap so if you are above 6 handicap its not for you. Normally played on Sundays but sometimes midweek.
Derbyshire Foursomes Intermediate Division – Matchplay Foursomes
Played as a knock-out A team of 4 played off 7 handicap so if you are 7 to 11 this is for you. Normally played on Sundays but sometime midweek.
Derbyshire Foursomes Division 2 – Matchplay Foursomes
Played as a knock-out A team of 4 played off 12 handicap so if you are 12 to 15 handicap this is for you. Normally played on Sundays but sometime midweek.
Derbyshire & Cheshire League – Single Matchplay
Played midweek, an opportunity for all handicaps to play matchplay and visit other courses Two divisions 0 to 12 and 10 to 20. Normally starts at about 17.00 followed by a meal afterwards is compulsory at a cost of £8.00 plus 50p tip for the staff.
Usually played mid-week, all players 0 to 20 handicap and over 50 years of age are eligible.
